Yoga Mudras — Hand Gestures and Their Meanings

30 hand mudras with Sanskrit names, how to form each gesture, the element it works with, and a quick quiz.

A mudra (Sanskrit: "seal" or "gesture") is a hand position used in yoga and meditation to steady attention and, in tradition, to direct prana. Each finger is linked to an element — thumb fire, index air, middle space, ring earth, little finger water — and a mudra joins or folds them in a specific way. Below are the 30 hand mudras most used in modern practice, grouped by purpose.

Honest note: hand mudras have very little clinical research behind them. What is defensible is that a held gesture is a reliable anchor for attention and pairs naturally with slow breathing; the traditional claims are described here as tradition, not as medical advice.
