Meaning and tradition

The name refers to Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity of Hindu tradition, whose title Vighnaharta means “remover of obstacles.” Ganesha is invoked at the start of ventures, and this mudra carries that role into practice. The name comes from gana, “group” or “host,” and isha, “lord.” It is not described in the classical hatha yoga texts in this form; it is a popular and modern hand-gesture practice, taught in some yoga and kundalini-style settings. Its association is with fire, the element of the thumb, though the whole hand is involved. Tradition describes the effort of hooking and pulling as a way to feel energy gather at the heart.

How to practice

Sit in Easy Pose, stand in Mountain Pose, or try it in Chair Pose for extra effort. Turn the left palm outward and the right palm toward the chest, hook the fingers of both hands together at the heart, and let the elbows float out to the sides. Breathe with Ujjayi Breath, a gentle throat-constricted breath, or with Dirga Breath. Keep the hold on the inhale, and on the exhale pull the hands gently apart. Do 6 to 12 breaths, then switch the palm directions and repeat.

Tips and common mistakes

The key detail is that the palms oppose each other: the left palm faces out and the right palm faces the chest, and the fingers hook rather than lie flat.

Unlike Vajrapradama Mudra, where the fingers are loosely interlaced with both palms toward the chest and nothing pulls, here the fingers are bent into hooks, the palms oppose, and the hands pull.

Unlike Garuda Mudra, where the wrists cross and the thumbs lock with the fingers spread, here the fingers hook at the heart and the wrists do not cross.

Unlike Linga Mudra, where the fingers are interlocked with the left thumb pointing straight up, here no thumb stands up and the fingers are hooked.

Keep the pull small and steady, keep the shoulders down, and do not hold your breath while pulling.

Tradition vs. evidence

Hand mudras have little clinical research, and none supports the specific claims for this one. What is defensible is that a gentle, rhythmic pull timed with the exhale gives attention an anchor and may feel energizing as light muscular effort. The language of removing obstacles and building inner fire is traditional and symbolic.
