Meaning and tradition

Matangi is the name of a goddess in the Hindu tantric tradition, associated with speech, music and inner knowledge. The gesture is taught in modern yoga as the Mudra of Inner Harmony, a calming hand position for seated practice. It is a modern, popularized teaching and is not described in the classical hatha yoga texts.

Its element association (balance of all five) comes from the finger map used in modern hasta mudra systems, where the interlaced hands bring all the fingers together.

How to practice

Sit in Easy Pose with a tall spine. Bring both hands in front of the solar plexus, interlace the fingers, and extend the two middle fingers straight so they touch along their length. Cross the thumbs and let the elbows hang relaxed.

Breathe slowly through the nose. Dirga Breath gives a steady rhythm. Hold for 5 to 15 minutes, then unlace the fingers and shake out the hands.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep the hold light. The interlaced fingers should feel supported, not squeezed.

Look at which fingers extend. Unlike Uttarabodhi Mudra, where the two index fingers point up and the thumbs point down, here the middle fingers are the ones that extend and the thumbs cross. Unlike Yoni Mudra, where the index fingertips and thumb tips form a diamond, here no diamond is formed.

Keep the shoulders soft and the wrists neutral.

Tradition vs. evidence

Claims that this gesture harmonizes the inner energies come from a symbolic framework and are not supported by clinical studies. What can be said honestly is that a quiet, defined hand shape gives attention something to settle on and pairs well with slow breathing.
