Mushti is Sanskrit for fist. The fist gesture is found in popular mudra lists and in hand-gesture systems used in dance and ritual, where it can signify firmness or resolve. It is mainly a modern, popularized teaching rather than a gesture described in classical hatha yoga texts, and the details vary between sources.
Its association with fire follows the finger map used in modern hasta mudra systems, where the thumb is fire; with the thumb outside the fingers, it is read as fire in charge of the hand.
How to practice
Sit in Easy Pose or Hero Pose with the spine long. Rest the hands on the thighs. Curl the fingers into the palm and lay the thumb across the outside of the folded fingers. Hold the grip firm but not tight.
Breathe slowly through the nose. Dirga Breath gives a steady rhythm. Hold for a few breaths up to five minutes, then open the hands.
Tips and common mistakes
Do not clench. A fist squeezed hard tightens the forearm and the shoulder, which defeats the purpose of a calm seated practice.
Look at where the thumb is. Unlike Adi Mudra, where the thumb is tucked inside the palm and the fingers wrap over it, here the thumb lies on the outside, over the middle and ring fingers.
Keep both hands identical and the wrists straight.
Tradition vs. evidence
Claims that this gesture strengthens resolve or changes the fire element come from a symbolic framework and are not supported by clinical studies. What can be said honestly is that a defined, effortless hand shape gives attention something to settle on and pairs well with slow breathing.
