Meaning and tradition

Dhyāna is Sanskrit for “meditation,” so Dhyāna Mudrā is the “gesture of meditation.” It is one of the oldest and best-known mudras, appearing in Buddhist iconography where the seated Buddha rests both hands in the lap, and it is also common in Hindu and Hatha yoga images. Samadhi Mudra is a related name used in some traditions. The hands are open, palms up, in a stacked position that does not follow the single-finger element pairing. Instead, tradition reads the whole shape as a balance of all five elements, with the thumbs touching at the top.

How to practice

Sit in Lotus Pose, Easy Pose, or Hero Pose. Rest the left hand in the lap, palm up. Place the right hand on top of the left, also palm up, with the fingers aligned. Touch the thumb tips lightly so the two thumbs and the index fingers form an oval. Rest the hands against the lower belly or on the heels or crossed legs. Breathe with Sama Vritti, Om Breath, or Nadi Shodhana, then hold for 10 to 30 minutes.

Tips and common mistakes

Tradition vs. evidence

Tradition connects Dhyana Mudra with stillness and balance, and in Buddhism it marks the meditating figure. These meanings are symbolic and cultural. Hand mudras have little clinical research behind them. What holds up is that a stable hand position in the lap reduces fidgeting, and the thumb oval offers a small cue: if it flattens or separates, attention has probably wandered.
