Meaning and tradition

Vajra means “thunderbolt” or “diamond,” a symbol of something indestructible, and pradama is usually rendered as “bestowing” or “giving,” so the name is often translated as “bestowing the unshakable” or “the mudra of unshakable trust.” It appears in Buddhist-influenced hand-gesture lists and is popular in modern yoga and meditation circles. Its textual lineage is less clear than for the classical hatha gestures, so it is fair to call it a largely modern, popularly taught mudra with Buddhist-flavored naming. As a whole-hand gesture it is said to bring all five elements into balance rather than to single one out.

How to practice

Sit in Easy Pose with a tall spine, or lie in Corpse Pose with the hands resting on the chest. Interlace the fingers loosely, turn the palms toward the heart, and rest the hands flat against the center of the chest with the thumbs extended up toward the collarbones. Let the elbows fall out to the sides. Breathe with Dirga Breath, a slow three-part breath, or with Resonance Breathing, a steady rhythm of about five to six breaths per minute. Hold for a few breaths up to five minutes, then unlace the fingers and rest the hands.

Tips and common mistakes

The hands sit against the chest, with the palms toward the heart. The fingers are interlaced, but only loosely, and the thumbs point up toward the collarbones rather than lying folded in.

Unlike Ganesha Mudra, where the fingers are hooked and the left palm faces out, here the fingers are simply interlaced with both palms toward the chest, and no pulling is involved.

Unlike Uttarabodhi Mudra, where the index fingers extend together pointing up and the thumbs point down or cross, here every finger stays interlaced and the thumbs point up.

Keep the shoulders down and the elbows relaxed, not lifted. Avoid squeezing the fingers white; if the hands feel tight, loosen the interlace until the gesture feels effortless.

Tradition vs. evidence

Mudras have little clinical research behind them, and there is none specific to this one. What can reasonably be said is that resting the hands on the chest gives the attention a physical anchor and may feel comforting, especially when paired with slow breathing. The associations with trust and unshakable confidence are symbolic and traditional.
