Meaning and tradition

Kubera is the Hindu deity of wealth and the guardian of the northern direction, often shown as a treasurer of the gods. The name of the mudra follows from him, and it is also called the Three-Finger Mudra or Mudra of Wealth. Kubera Mudra is a popular, modern hand-gesture practice, not a gesture described in the classical hatha yoga texts. By the common finger-element scheme, the thumb is fire, the index finger is air, and the middle finger is space, so the three touching tips combine these. The folded ring and little fingers, earth and water, are drawn in and set aside. Tradition frames the whole shape as concentrating energy and intention.

How to practice

Sit in Easy Pose or stand in Mountain Pose. Touch the pads of the thumb, index, and middle fingertips together on both hands, and fold the ring and little fingers into the palm. Rest the hands on the thighs with the palms up, or hold them in front of the chest. Breathe with Dirga Breath, a slow three-part breath, or follow it with a short round of Kapalabhati if you are experienced and comfortable with it. Hold for 5 to 15 minutes, then release and shake out the hands.

Tips and common mistakes

The defining detail is three fingertips touching and two fingers folded. The ring and little fingers curl into the palm rather than stay extended.

Unlike Prana Mudra, where the ring and little finger tips touch the thumb and the index and middle fingers stay extended, Kubera touches the thumb, index, and middle tips and folds the other two.

Unlike Apana Mudra, where the middle and ring fingertips touch the thumb and the index and little fingers stay extended, Kubera uses the index and middle with the thumb and folds the ring and little fingers.

Unlike Hakini Mudra, where all five fingertips of one hand touch their partners on the other hand, Kubera is a three-fingertip touch on each hand separately, with two fingers folded.

Keep the pressure light, the wrists straight, and the shoulders down.

Tradition vs. evidence

Mudras have little clinical research behind them, and none supports claims about wealth or energy from this one. What is defensible is that holding a small, specific shape gives attention an anchor, and that setting an intention while sitting quietly can be a useful ritual cue. The links to Kubera and abundance are traditional and symbolic.
