Meaning and tradition

Linga means “mark,” “sign,” or “symbol,” and it is also the name of the upright symbol of Shiva in Hindu worship. The standing thumb in this mudra echoes that upright form, and the finger-element logic reinforces the idea: the thumb is fire, and fire is the main element here. Linga Mudra is a popular, modern hand-gesture practice, described in contemporary mudra guides rather than in classical hatha yoga texts. Tradition describes it as a heating mudra, hence the alternate names Mudra of Heat and Upright Mudra, and teachers recommend caution with long holds.

How to practice

Sit in Easy Pose or on the edge of a chair, or try Chair Pose with the hands at the chest if you want a stronger posture. Interlock the fingers in front of the chest with the palms facing each other. Raise the left thumb straight up, and encircle it with the right thumb and index finger. Breathe slowly through the nose. Teachers often pair it with Bhastrika Breath or Surya Bhedana, both traditionally described as warming, but begin with plain slow breathing, and shorten the hold if you feel warm. Hold for 5 to 15 minutes, then release.

Tips and common mistakes

The unmistakable features are interlocked fingers, a single thumb standing straight up, and the encircling grip of the other thumb and index finger.

Unlike Shankh Mudra, where the right fingers wrap around the left thumb in a closed conch shape and the right thumb touches the extended left middle finger, here the fingers are interlaced and the left thumb stands free.

Unlike Ganesha Mudra, where the fingers are hooked, the left palm faces out, and the hands pull on the exhale, here the palms face each other, the hold is still, and nothing pulls.

Unlike Uttarabodhi Mudra, where the index fingers extend together pointing up and the thumbs point down or cross, here only the left thumb stands up and the index fingers stay interlocked or encircle the thumb.

Keep the shoulders down and the elbows relaxed.

Tradition vs. evidence

Mudras have little clinical research behind them, and none shows that this one produces heat or changes body temperature. What is defensible is that a firm, upright thumb gives the mind a simple point of focus, and that the interlocked hands help keep a steady posture. The heating effect is a traditional claim, so treat it with caution and respect your own comfort.
