完整指南(英文)

Meaning and tradition

Ādi means “first” or “primal” in Sanskrit, so Ādi Mudrā is the “primal gesture.” A popular explanation says newborn babies naturally hold their hands this way, thumbs tucked inside closed fingers, which is why it is called first. That story is traditional folk explanation, not a documented text. In the finger-element map, the thumb stands for fire and is held inside the palm, surrounded by the other fingers. Adi Mudra is mainly a modern teaching in Hatha and breath-focused yoga, not a classical text gesture.

How to practice

Sit in Easy Pose or Hero Pose, or lie in Corpse Pose with the hands resting at your sides. Place the hands palm-down on the thighs. Fold each thumb into the palm so its tip touches the base of the little finger, then close the four fingers over it in a soft fist. Breathe with Dirga Breath or Box Breathing, keeping the fist loose throughout. Hold for 5 to 15 minutes, then open the hands slowly.

Tips and common mistakes

Tradition vs. evidence

Tradition links Adi Mudra with calm and with steady, deep breathing, and the “first gesture” story is symbolic. Hand mudras have little clinical research behind them. What is defensible is that a simple, repeatable hand shape gives you a physical cue to slow your breath and notice when attention drifts.
