Meaning and tradition

Apana Vayu Mudra combines two Sanskrit terms. Apana is the downward-moving aspect of vital energy in yogic physiology, and vayu means air or wind. Other names include Mritsanjeevani Mudra (“life-restoring”) and Heart Mudra. It belongs to the hasta mudra systems popularized in modern yoga and Ayurveda-influenced hand-gesture manuals rather than to the classical hatha yoga texts, and its attribution to the heart is a relatively recent teaching tradition.

The finger logic follows the usual map: thumb is fire, index is air, middle is space, ring is earth, little is water. Here the index is folded away, which in these systems is said to reduce air, while the middle (space) and ring (earth) fingers join the thumb (fire). The little finger stays out.

How to practice

Sit in Easy Pose with a tall spine, or lie back in Corpse Pose. Turn the palms up. Fold your index finger so the fingertip touches the fleshy base of the thumb, then bring the tips of the middle and ring fingers to the tip of the thumb. The little finger stays straight. Form the same shape on both hands.

Breathe through the nose at an easy pace. Dirga Breath, the three-part breath, or Resonance Breathing at roughly five to six breaths a minute both pair well. Hold for 10 to 15 minutes if comfortable, then release the fingers and shake out the hands.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep the pressure feather-light. The fingers should touch, not press, and the hands should feel loose enough that you could drop the shape without effort.

Check the shoulders. Rest the hands on the thighs so the arms hang without lifting the shoulders toward the ears.

Know the neighbors. Unlike Apana Mudra, where the index finger stays extended and only middle and ring touch the thumb, here the index is folded to the thumb base. Unlike Vayu Mudra, the middle and ring fingers also join the thumb tip instead of staying extended. Unlike Prana Mudra, the ring finger is not paired with the little finger, the index is folded, and the little finger remains straight.

Keep both hands identical; a mismatched shape is the most common slip when attention drifts.

Tradition vs. evidence

There is very little clinical research on hand mudras, and no verified mechanism links this finger shape to the heart or to any organ. What is defensible is that a specific, effortless hand shape gives the mind an anchor and pairs naturally with slow, even breathing. The heart associations are traditional claims, not medical ones.
