Spesso abbinato a respiri profondi e ampi.
Dà all'attenzione un ancoraggio saldo e semplice.
Cinmaya combines cit, “consciousness,” with the suffix -maya, “made of” or “full of,” giving roughly “the gesture full of awareness.” The thumb stands for fire and the index finger for air. The curled middle, ring, and little fingers stand for space, earth, and water drawn inward. Chinmaya Mudra is mostly a modern teaching in the yoga tradition rather than a classical text gesture, and some schools pair it with deep breathing, where the closed hand is said to mirror the inward focus of the breath.
How to practice
Sit in Easy Pose or Hero Pose. Place both hands palm-down on the thighs. Touch the tip of the index finger to the tip of the thumb to make a circle, then curl the middle, ring, and little fingers loosely into the palm. Keep the curl soft, never gripping. Breathe with Dirga Breath or Sama Vritti, or follow the natural breath. Hold for 5 to 15 minutes, then uncurl the fingers and rest the hands open.
Tips and common mistakes
Let the hands rest on the thighs. Do not hover them in the air or press them down.
Keep the shoulders loose and the wrists straight, not bent.
Unlike Gyan Mudra, the palm faces down and the middle, ring, and little fingers curl in instead of extending.
Unlike Chin Mudra, which also has the palm down, the three outer fingers curl into the palm instead of staying extended.
Unlike Adi Mudra, the thumb touches the index finger instead of folding inside the fist, so a gap forms between thumb and index finger instead of a closed fist.
Keep both hands identical. A common slip is letting the fingers of one hand relax open.
Tradition vs. evidence
Tradition connects Chinmaya Mudra with awareness and with fuller breathing, but these claims are symbolic and come from teaching lineages, not laboratory findings. Hand mudras have little clinical research behind them. What you can defend is that a defined hand shape provides a physical cue for attention and a reminder to breathe slowly.
