Vijf elementen Element: water

Meaning and tradition

Varuna is the Vedic deity of the waters and the cosmic order, and Varun Mudra takes its name from him. It is also called Jal Mudra (jal meaning water) and the Mudra of Water. It belongs to the hasta mudra systems popularized in modern yoga and Ayurveda-influenced hand-gesture manuals, and is not a gesture from the classical hatha yoga texts.

The finger logic follows the usual map: thumb is fire, index is air, middle is space, ring is earth, little is water. Joining the little finger (water) to the thumb (fire) is read in these systems as balancing the water element.

How to practice

Sit in Easy Pose or Butterfly Pose, spine long. Rest the hands palm up on the thighs or knees. Touch the little fingertip to the thumb tip. The index, middle and ring fingers stay straight but soft.

Pair it with Sitali Breath, the cooling curled-tongue breath, or Chandra Bhedana, the left-nostril moon breath. Hold 10 to 20 minutes, then release.

Settle first, then form the gesture. Spend a few breaths noticing the weight of the body on the seat, and only then bring the finger and thumb together. If the hands feel cold or tense, rub them together for a moment beforehand so the fingers move easily. Many people find a quiet room and a cushion under the hips make a long hold far more comfortable than any adjustment of the fingers.

Tips and common mistakes

Keep contact feather-light. Pressing the little finger hard tires the hand.

Check which fingertip meets the thumb. Unlike Prithvi Mudra, where the ring finger touches the thumb, here it is the little finger and the ring finger stays extended. Unlike Akash Mudra, where the middle finger touches, here the middle stays extended. Unlike Gyan Mudra, where the index meets the thumb, here the index is extended.

The little finger is short, so you may need to bring the thumb toward it a little; relax the wrist rather than forcing the reach.

Keep both hands identical and the palms up.

Tradition vs. evidence

Claims that this gesture treats dehydration, dry skin or other conditions are traditional and not supported by clinical research. What is defensible is the calm, open-handed shape as an attention anchor, especially alongside slow cooling breath. Do not use it in place of medical care.

Ademhaling

Houdingen
