Vayu is Sanskrit for air or wind, and the gesture is also called the Mudra of Air. In the Ayurveda-influenced hasta mudra systems popular in modern yoga, it is taught as a way to reduce the air element, which tradition links to restlessness, and is usually listed among the five elemental mudras. It is mainly a modern, popularized teaching rather than a gesture described in classical hatha yoga texts.
The logic follows the finger map: thumb is fire, index is air, middle is space, ring is earth, little is water. In Vayu Mudra the index finger (air) is folded under the thumb (fire), which in these systems is read as fire pressing down on air.
How to practice
Sit in Easy Pose or Hero Pose with the spine long. Rest the hands palm up on the thighs. Fold each index finger down until its tip rests on the base of the thumb, then lay the thumb across the folded finger with a soft touch. The other three fingers extend naturally.
Breathe slowly through the nose. Dirga Breath or the even count of Sama Vritti both give the mind a rhythm to follow. Hold for 5 to 15 minutes, then straighten the index fingers and shake the hands out.
Tips and common mistakes
Use almost no pressure. The thumb rests; it does not clamp. Gripping tightens the forearm and defeats the purpose.
Look at which finger folds. Unlike Shunya Mudra, where the middle finger is folded, here it is the index. Unlike Surya Mudra, where the ring finger folds, here the ring finger stays straight. Unlike Vishnu Mudra, the hand is not lifted to the face and the index and middle fingers are not both folded. Unlike Apana Vayu Mudra, the middle and ring fingertips do not touch the thumb tip.
Keep the extended fingers loose, not stiffly spread, and keep both hands identical with the palms up.
Tradition vs. evidence
Claims that this gesture changes the air element or relieves specific conditions come from a symbolic framework and are not supported by clinical studies. What can be said honestly is that a defined, effortless hand shape gives attention something to settle on and pairs well with slow breathing.
